Maria Gvardeitseva
Video Art, Triptych, 0’33 min, 0’40 min, 1’00 min

In the tradition of European painting, a woman is depicted from the front. As a rule, most of the nude female images in art history are objectified. Depicting goddesses, biblical heroines or muses, the artists fulfilled the task of satisfying the male gaze.
In this video triptych, Maria Gvardeitseva filmed herself from behind. And this perspective for her is the opposition to tradition, considering herself as a subject and about accepting herself outside of socio-political dogmas and imposed standards. Pouring water in the videos symbolises tears, cleansing, getting rid of lived and already unnecessary emotions, vitality and the continuation of life.
This work is a part of the 5-Minutes Bedtime Stories project by the artist.
